How Barry Brown & Sons’ Thermal Energy Storage (TES) System Cools Milk

Milk Enters the System
Fresh milk arrives from the milking line at about 36°C. It passes through a plate heat exchanger using cool groundwater, dropping the temperature to around 22°C. Heat from this stage is reused to warm water for farm use, saving energy.Glycol Cooling
Next, glycol chilled to –2°C removes more heat. This lowers the milk temperature quickly to just under 4°C, which is safe for storage and transport.Ice Ball Energy Storage
Chilled glycol comes from a tank filled with ice balls. These are made using off-peak electricity or solar power. As they melt, the ice balls release stored cooling energy, keeping the glycol at –2°C without running compressors constantly.Solar and Off-Peak Power
Using off-peak or solar energy to freeze ice balls reduces electricity costs and emissions. It also avoids heavy power use during peak hours.Pumps and Controls
Automated pumps circulate the glycol at the right temperature. Continuous monitoring ensures smooth cooling without interrupting milking. The system works with both grid power and solar batteries.Final Cooling and Storage
Cooled milk moves into a jacketed holding tank. This keeps it at the correct temperature until pickup, ensuring safety and quality.

Stainless Steel Tanks, Industrial Water Chillers & Equipment

Heating & Cooling Systems
